ePrescribing was identified in the National eHealth Strategy for Ireland[i] (Department of Health, 2013) as a key priority. The benefits of ePrescribing and the electronic transfer of prescriptions initiatives are well documented and an increasing number of countries adopt the use of ePrescribing and the electronic transfer of prescriptions (ETP). These benefits include increased time to spend with patient with a corresponding improvement in patient safety. The eHealth Strategy identified seven actions to realise its objectives. Actions identified in the eHealth Strategy included:

  • utilising eHealth to place the patient firmly at the centre of the new healthcare environment, and
  • the formation of a dedicated, focused and strongly branded entity called eHealth Ireland.

In addition, a list of potential priority projects was identified, including ePrescribing, online referrals and scheduling, telehealthcare, patient summary records, online access to health information and a national patient portal.
